UPDATED: See video below… As hinted in my last movie review, I’m not a fan of the horror genre, but a positive review on Fresh Air/NPR motivated me to see this one in theaters. I was a little disappointed that the NPR review gave away just a little too much of the plot twist that is hinted at in the trailer but not really revealed. I’d suggest seeing this one in theaters theater and avoiding reviews until seeing it. It doesn’t really spoil things, but it would have been a better experience only knowing that this was going to be an action/horror story set in the racist South in the 1930s.
Sound and music are very important to this story, which is one reason to see it in theaters. They really had the sound cranked up in a way that I wouldn’t have if I was watching at home. With the story centering around the opening of this juke joint, there is so much music that this movie is almost a musical, even the bad guys show up to play their instruments and sing their songs. I do wish that they had stuck to era authentic music and not tried to blend in more ancient and modern genres, though there is a story reason for doing that. The voice and guitar playing of the young actor, Miles Caton, playing Sammie Moore/Preacher’s kid, I could have listened to a lot more of that. It was enough that it made me want to play more guitar and connect with the spirits through music when I left the theater. Also, there are important mid- and post credit scenes. Enjoy.
