1860 recording of a human voice
1860 recording of a human voice

This one popped up in my feeds and made me pause for a moment to contemplate what it means to “create” and in the case of Scott de Martinville, have someone else steal your thunder (I have long held a low esteem of a certain American “inventor” who was more of a marketeer and took credit for the work of others… which reminds me very much of a certain “genius” who’s running the same scam in our current generation). Anyway, for me, as a writer in this age of endless A.I. slop, I know that I need to continue to plug away at the stories bubbling up inside of me and get them out, regardless of whether anyone ever reads them. Obviously, I’d prefer that they were read and remembered, but I don’t do this just for that reason alone. I do it because there’s a part of me that’s convinced that I have to do this.

I’m driven to do this because it’s literally how I make sense of the world and try to learn from my own experiences and efforts. Just “remembering” isn’t enough for me. Going through my Journal Project, almost daily entries going back to the 1980s, there is so much that I just don’t remember… So, that’s what I do, every day, knowing that I’m only one lone voice in a world of billions that’s being drowned out by the nonsense of machines guessing which words to string together without the “benefit” of a “person” behind the words. I just hope that my words find a life and existence and don’t have to wait 148-years to be “discovered.” Enjoy.
