This is the artwork that I recently put up in the entry way of my condo. I’m a bit of a Beatles fan, and I couldn’t imagine a better way to watch “A Hard Day’s Night” except in a theater full of fans on a breezy Portland Saturday morning.

I settled into my seat in Cinema 21’s theater one and it was the perfect setting for revisiting this classic from over 60-years ago. Theater one is a large sloping room, with the old style squishy cloth-covered seats that can rock a little back and forth but they don’t recline, don’t have footrests and your seats are not pre-assigned. This meant you had to get there well before the start time to find an open seat and theater was relatively packed for 11 O’clock on a Saturday morning. It was a perfect venue to time-travel to the summer of 1964 when the world was a very different place, with young people all over the world going a bit bonkers over these fellows from England who had just appeared on Ed Sullivan’s Sunday variety show and it was just fun.
I’ve lost count of the number of versions of the movie that I’ve purchased over the years (but then I’ve done the same thing with the Beatles records… LPs, cassettes, CDs, boxed sets…). One thing I love is the behind-the-scenes materials, out-takes and featurettes from this very special time that still makes me smile all these years and decades later. If you get a chance to see this movie in a theater, just do it. Great movies are meant to be seen with crowds of fans and this one didn’t disappoint back then or 62-years later.
Here’s one of many “making of” videos that I’ve seen. Enjoy.
