I’ve been more than a little lost over the past few weeks. I have a close friend fighting loneliness and misses family members who’ve passed on. I have several friends who feel a target on their backs because how they choose to live their lives has become a political game to the powerful. As a retiree living on my social security, I feel insecure in my immediate future and the potential theft of my retirement fund that I paid into for over the past 30 years. And I’m tired of all of the voices who treat all of this like it’s some kind of winnable game.
I can’t imagine what my former coworkers are going through having to report to their classrooms every day, feeling even less empowered to do their jobs educating their students without political interference. I’m discouraged that a convicted felon with a history of lying, self-dealing and bankruptcy was still voted for by almost half of those who voted in the last national election (only saving grace is that he still didn’tGET THE MAJORITY VOTE!). So 2016 wasn’t quite the anomaly that many of us thought that it was. I’m just exhausted from so much noise online and the inability of those whom I’ve trusted with my votes to get anything done.
So, I’ve escaped into my LEGO hobby for the past month. Well, it’s been my obsession for more than just the past month, but there’s been a definite uptick in my choice to work on whatever building project I’m engaged in versus doing anything else including going to the movies or writing. That’s not really a good thing. But it’s perfectly in keeping with my ongoing struggle to figure out how to manage my time and energies (and economic investments) that is more of a healthy balance of all of my interests and skills versus the binge method that I’ve tended to do.
I’ll figure it out, but I’m acknowledging that these are difficult times and if you’re experiencing this low level of dread and anxiety, I see you, my friend. Be well, hug those you love and live the life you yearn for. Please, don’t give up.
