Happy Nevada Day. This means that there’s no classes today, so this is an Internet/Blog only post. It’s been an interesting adventure since I’ve decided to share on my blog the daily writing/reflection prompts that I give to my mentorship class. The daily mentorship class is like a homeroom class that in the two previous years was a once a week class designed to support students as we transitioned to remote learning at the beginning of the shutdown of on campus classes during the COVID pandemic. In it’s current daily version it’s a brief 13-minute class (except on Wednesdays the class is 30-minutes). During the first week of school it took me a day or two to figure out that 13-minutes isn’t long enough for any kind of traditional “lesson” but is just long enough to take roll and do announcements.

All of my classes have some kind of daily prompt which is designed to get them focused on whatever we’re going to work on today. While they work on that I take roll. Coming up with a daily prompt for this class has been a challenge. We were given a general weekly thematic guide:

  • Meditation Monday
  • Talk About It Tuesday (current events/news
  • Wednesday Wins (Cashman Weekly News show)
  • Thoughtful Thursday (Gratitude)
  • Fun Friday (Weekly progress check)

I’ve tried to use the themes, but often something will show up in my feeds or something is happening in the news (like the solar eclipse earlier in the week) and I go with that. For a short 13-minute class I can easily spend an hour planning and coming up with the prompt. And given how students will often ignore assignment(s), that helped inspire me to share these prompts with y’all on this blog. Speaking of which, if you only see this post on Facebook, please click on the link to open the post on my blog and find the “Please Subscribe” button, add your email address and you’ll get all of my posts automatically in your email. And please feel free to respond on the blog and in Facebook to these prompts. Thanks.

Oh yeah, today’s prompt/video is a silly info video about the state of Nevada, in recognition of today being Nevada Day. Enjoy.
