It’s been a very long time since I’ve been excited about a new iPhone, I mean like it’s been over a decade since I pondered an iPhone purchase on my blog or podcast. Needless to say, I’ve long since drifted away from feeling like I needed to upgrade my iPhone with every yearly product cycle (I’m still happily rocking my iPhone 13 Pro Max). And I only bought a new iPad mini at the end of 2024 mostly because I wanted to avoid the threat of a huge tariff price increase because someone doesn’t seem to understand that tariffs only hurt the customers and small businesses. Anyway, when the rumors started cropping up a couple years ago, I thought that I’d wait to do my next iPhone upgrade until they introduced a foldable… and now that they’ve done it, it seems like a good time to make the leap.
I knew that I was hooked when I started to research what kinds of protective cases are going to be available when the device is set to be released in late October, skipping right from should I get the phone to what are the accessories that I should also get. On the plus side, I already have the latest generation Apple Pencil that should work with the device… I’m also wondering, besides trading in my old iPhone 13 Pro Max, I should see about including my relatively new iPad mini with the trade-in… Yeah, I’ve already moved on from whether I should, to the steps needed to take to make this happen.
As part of my research I’ve watched reflections and commentary YouTube videos from all of the usual tech suspects: iJustin, Marques Brownlee, 9-to-5 Mac, and Joanna Stern. I even bothered watching a video from notorious Apple-haters like Linus Tech Tools with the click-bait video title “Apple Just Copied Microsoft’s Worst Idea” (which, I guess, is a reference to the Microsoft “Courier” device that was never introduced because Ballmer and company couldn’t fathom how this would help them sell more copies of Word or Windows…). Speaking of software, I think the video that best reflects my own thinking about why I’m planning on making this purchase is from MacSparky:
When I bought the first iPhone in 2007 for the ridiculous price of $599, even though I said that I was planning on waiting for the 2nd iteration of the device, I couldn’t imagine going back to my old Handspring Treo (I just checked, I bought the Treo 650 for $551 in 2005, so $599 wasn’t quite as ridiculous as the press would have one believe, unless one was switching from a cheap non-Smart phone). Then I did the upgrade with each generation up to the iPhone 7-plus in 2016. I slowed down with the iPhone XR in 2018 and then my current iPhone 13 Pro Max in 2021. It feels like it’s time to make the switch. Is it really drinking the Apple Cool-Aid if it turns out to be the drink that you really want? If you’re an iPhone user are you thinking about making the upgrade?
Here’s one last Apple commercial touting their version of the foldable smartphone. Enjoy. JBB
