Any opportunity to revisit Middle Earth is alright by me and this film didn’t disappoint. It was a tad challenging following all the names of these unfamiliar characters, but the story was well worth the effort. Telling a story set hundreds of years before a well-known tale hasn’t been done successfully by many filmmakers (I’m think about you, Enterprise from StarTrek or the StarWars prequels) and often resorts to just rehashing the same characters and plot line. This one is different, with no well-known voice actors (except Brian Cox) and no real guarantee as to who will survive the telling of this tale. I don’t know how much of this film took from Tolkien’s famous appendices. It’s worth a watch or more, and screw the haters who think that there’s something wrong with casting female leads to heroic action stories. I don’t know about you, but I’m not threatened by the notion that the hero of the story has nothing to do with their gender but is more about who they are inside. I love those kinds of stories. Enjoy.
