This one showed up in my feeds (Thanks Tristen Spears). As someone who created his first Twitter account in 2008 and enjoyed the interaction and communication back in those days, I’m not particularly happy with the direction that social media has been taking. I’m a firm believer in the possibilities of online communities. I’ve worked on two advanced college degrees in online programs and taught at the university level fully online for six years. I know how this can be done and done well. Facebook and Twitter are not that, and have fallen very far short for a long time. At the same time I have to acknowledge that my sense of connection with y’all is through these damn platforms and their ad-driven algorithms. I wish it were better.

So, I think I’m going to participate in the “Lights Out META” experiment and log-out of my META related accounts for a week beginning tomorrow, January 19th. That should prove to be an interesting experience. At the same time, I have no intention of not continuing my online presence via my various other accounts. You’ll find links to my work there. In particular, you might want to follow me on BlueSky at joebustillos.bsky.social. Quite frankly, if you are at all interested in my work it would be much more efficient is you just subscribed to my blog at josephbrucebustillos.com

I’ve included a form below that you can use to subscribe to my posts. Just type in your email address, hit the Subscribe button and every time I post you’ll get the post directly in your email inbox. No need to chase around the internets wondering what the last thing I’ve posted or movie I’ve viewed, etc. No apps to install, no account to create, no algorithm to contend with, just type in your email and hit the button.

Also, over in the right column of every post is a grey box with a red PLEASE SUBSCRIBE button right below it. Where it says “TYPE Y” you can type in your email address, hit the red button and it’ll do the same thing as the form above

Let’s see how this little “No META” experiment goes. I’ll post this on January 18th ‘cause on the 19th it’ll be lights out for META. This should be interesting.
