It seemed fitting to watch this movie on the 55th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11. Granted, when I saw Scarlett Johansson’s promo video during NASA’s eclipse presentation in April I wasn’t sure how I felt about a story that included the idea that NASA supported the idea of faking the moon landing “just in case,” and that NASA helped with the movie’s production. What? That seems wrong. Well, being a NASA supporter and fan I had to see what this was about. For those of us who have witnessed actual NASA launches in person, it is something emotional when you see it on the big screen. Sadly I never got a chance to see a Saturn V launch, but I’ve seen several Space Shuttle and Delta Heavy launches and they’ll knock your socks off and seeing in a big crowd, there’s a lot of human energy shouting for the damn thing to fly. They got that part right. The other thing they got right is/was the dedication of all those thousands of young people, mostly under the age of 30, trying to do the impossible. And that’s not something you can possibly fake. I enjoyed it, but I really don’t know who this film is for, NASA fans or nostalgic Boomers or Johansson/Tatum fans. There were some nitpicking problems that only a NASA nerd would notice or care about (similar to “Hidden Figures”), but it’s a cute romantic comedy nonetheless. Enjoy.
