Someone quipped as we left the theater, “Well, that was a movie.” My fondness for quirky stories does have a limit. This one got really close. I did not know anything about this movie going in except that the actors would be completely unrecognizable, given that the story was about a group of Sasquatches just living their lives. Think “Quest for Fire” with even less of an actual story. The choice to have them communicate only through grunts and gestures made this “year-in-the-life” movie difficult to entirely appreciate. But the anthropology major in me was intrigued by the choices made by the filmmakers. How would a tiny group of four pre-fire or tool using “great apes” survive in the open wilderness? You might want to avoid this one if you’re squeamish about body functions portrayed on screen. There’s a touch of “deus ex machina” to move the story along, but only a touch. Catch this one soon in your local theater, it will be gone if you hesitate for too long, kind’a like the open wilderness itself.
