2023-01-16 – Las Vegas. I just realized that just a little over a month ago I was beginning my 19-day visit to Maui. While I was there I tried to stay on top of editing and posting whatever images/videos I was taking but around the mid-point, when we spent the day at Haleakala Observatory, I took too many images/videos to edit and post in the same day and then ran into issues trying to edit video on my iPad. Blah, blah, blah. Alas, I got behind (no one cares!). No worries, I stayed focused on enjoying the trip, continuing to take lots of images and videos and keep writing. At the moment I have a 93-day writing streak going, but that doesn’t anything to do with my Xmas trip to Hawaii. Anyway, I was determined to not take all of these pictures and videos and then let them languish, hidden on my computer.
So today I finally finished editing and posting everything from my xmas visit with my sister and family in Maui. Most days included a walk of some kind in some beautiful location so I recorded bits of those experiences. In fact, the only time I took out my very nice Sony A7c camera was during our hike on Haleakala Mountain. All the other images/videos were captures on my iPhone 13. In all I took well over 400 images/videos during my stay which found their way into 26 blog posts (including this one) of the 31 blog posts that I made related to the trip. Pretty much each day got its own blog post to share the activity of the day. You’ll find those posts listed below. Today I gathered all the images and video clips created during the trip and had the A.I. in the Photos app on my iPad cut all 400 images/videos into a summary video (posted above).
I can’t begin to say how thankful I am to Joyce, Dano, Nathan, Marie, Tony, Holly and even Aukai (the wonder dog!) for sharing your time with me, inviting me to stay in your home and tolerating my need to watch football whenever possible. You are good people and I’m happy to have spent the time with y’all. I’m so sorry that I didn’t visit sooner, when you could have shared Front Street and the historic district with me. But I look forward to future visits when we can share what good has grown from this tragedy. Until next time, all my love, JBB
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day 18: Heading Home to Las Vegas
2023-12-30. Getting ready to head back to Las Vegas. I’m thinking about the trip but don’t want to rush my reflection. That would be very anti-holiday or anti-Hawaiian mindset. It’s all about taking the time to enjoy the moment. That pretty much sums my feelings about...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Favorite Eats Part 2
I really got behind on my daily posting after the trip up the mountain to the observatory (excuses, excuses). So, to simplify things I’m going to post the last portion of this trip centered around the various activities, in this case, the food that we enjoyed during...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day 17: I Get My Feet Wet
2023-12-29 - Kamaole Park Beach. I guess it’s anathema to go to Hawaii and not get in the water. Everyone and their sister were adamant that I had to go snorkeling or some form of going swimming in the ocean. I enjoy hanging out at the beach, but as a kid I didn’t...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day 16: Hidden Path to the Beach
2023-12-28 Lahaina Executive Airport looking at Lahaina https://youtu.be/TFx_Ri0FOc0?si=CXctiCyHXqoXBK38 2023-12-28 Lahaina Executive Airport looking at Lahaina. We took a trip up to the small airport above Lahaina and got drizzled on. From the airport we could look...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Days 14 & 15: Golf Courses & Beaches
2023-12-26 . Kapalua Golf Course. Today was a very short walk up at the Kapalua Golf course. I got a picture of a rainbow. That is all. ???????? 2023-12-27 Montage Kapalua Bay. Back to the beach, the weather was threatening, but let us enjoy the walk without forcing...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day 13: Xmas Day Kapalua Golf Course
2023-12-25 Kapalua Golf Course. Yes, between breakfast, gift opening and dinner we took some time to return to the Kapalua Golf Course. It was a pretty nice, slightly windy day where one could see the water and Molokai in the distance. We also encountered a couple...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day 13: Xmas with Family & Friends
2023-12-25 O’Hanlon Residence. Christmas Day began with food, Maui Mimosas and gift opening. Oh yeah, and more football (there’s a two-hour difference between Pacific Time and Hawaii Time, so the games are on much earlier, that was an adjustment). I gifted my hosts...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day 12: Xmas Eve with Family & Friends
2023-12-24 O’Hanlon Residence. It’s been a good while since I’ve shared in a “family Christmas.” Some might think that I’m fortunate that way and none of this is to take away from previous Christmases, but I had a very good time just hanging out with the O’Hanlons and...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day 11: Haleakala Crater & Observatory part 4: Journey Back Down the Mountain
2023-12-23 3:50 PM HST. We came, we walked, we took lots of photos and we made the trek back down the mountain. Why is it that the trip there seems to take so much longer than the trip back? It’s a mystery of the cosmos. It also makes for a much shorter summary video....
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day 11: Haleakala Crater & Observatory part 3: Haleakala Observatory & Summit
2023-12-23 4:49PM HST. We reached the top. Well, we drove to the top and then took a short walk up a trail to a small structure called The House of the Sun that was closed for renovations. We were across the valley from the actual observatory structures, which were...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day 11: Haleakala Crater & Observatory Part 2: Pa Ka’oao White Hills Trail
2023-12-23 1:30PM HST. Haleakala Visitor Center was just before reaching the Summit/Observatory. Dano had just checked out the national park radio message and it noted that there were no bathroom facilities at the summit, so I suggested stopping at the Visitor Center,...
2022 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day 11: Haleakala Crater & Observatory part 1: Heading up the Mountain
2023-12-23 11:07 HST. Dano announced that today is the day to go up to Haleakala Observatory. So we geared up of mountain temperatures and the three hour drive. I don’t even remember what we had for breakfast. I grabbed a Diet Pepsi for the drive, a Snapple for the...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day 10: Another Short Wet Walk
2023-12-22. I brought my sweatshirt on the walk with me this time. I’m really glad I did. We walk through a beautiful resort grounds, with the drizzle and wind against us forcing me to put my sweatshirt on. By the time we got to the shoreline the drizzle had died down...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day Nine: Kapalua Coastal Trail
2023-12-21. Yesterday’s short wet adventure began at the left side of the map, near Kapalua Bay. Today’s longer walk began in the middle of the map, near Oneloa Bay, heading West on the map toward the rocky points in the upper left corner of the map. First part of the...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day Eight: Short Wet Walk
2023-12-20. The title says it, the weather was threatening when we got out of the car and I needed to decide whether to wear the sweatshirt I’d brought or not. I left the sweatshirt in the car. The weather was drizzly and the wind was blowing but it wasn’t a big down...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day Seven: Errands (Again) & Favorite Meals
2023-12-19. How is it that someone ends up going to Costco twice in the same Hawaiian vacation? I’m guessing it’s just a holiday with family kind of a thing. No worries. I much prefer participating in “normal life” when visiting than tourist crap. Thus, eating has...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day Six: Two Walk Monday, Part 2
2023-12-18. In the afternoon Joyce had to do a Post Office errand, during which Dano and I and the dog, Aukai, went for a short walk across the highway at Wahikuli Wayside Park. Both walks combined we did 8,047 steps. Here’s a few images from the shorter walk. First...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day Six: Two Walk Monday, Part 1
2023-12-18. I don’t remember exactly when, but mom asked what I thought about her getting a dog, maybe a puppy, while she was still living on her own in the Encinitas townhouse. I know how studies have shown how pets, like dogs, can improve the quality of life for...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day Five: Pineapple Hill
2023-12-17 2:25pm. Heading out for the daily dog walk. Friday’s 6+ mile walk with Joyce sans-dog “earned” me a day off (yesterday)... though getting off my butt for a short walk might have been a better recovery plan than sitting, editing images, writing and just...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day Three: Long Walk on the Beach
2023-12-15 2:00AM. Friday in Hawaii... Actually, I’m still up from Thursday night watching “Julia” on Max, like I need another series to be binging. I ended up watching all episodes except the last one... ugh. 2023-12-15 11AM. I started doing some image editing when...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Trip: Day Two: Running Errands
2023-12-14 11:23AM. Running errands. Not exactly a vacation-type activity, but my thing in my many travels, that seem to be more a distant memory at the moment, has always been about sampling the local scene(s) as quickly and as often as possible. So today I’m with...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Vacation: Day One: Settling In
2023-12-13. I began the day doing a little writing in this beautiful patio at the back of the house and then we went to walk the dog. It was a huge step up from the walk we took the yesterday afternoon. We went down a path in Kapalua with the Honokahua Bay on one side...
2023 Hawaiian Xmas Vacation: Taking Flight
2023-12-11 9:39PM PST. Night before flight prep mostly complete (just finishing downloading “Mare of Easttown” to watch before my Max account expires). I had one more delightful Double-Double at In-n-Out Burger before doing without for the next 19-days. My bags are...
