Fall 2001 Blue Print Project Intro:
I’ve been putting pen (or pencil) to paper for as long as I can remember. I was pretty much a doodler and wanna-be artist as a kid. I didn’t really discover the written word until halfway through high school, and eventually the stories and story ideas overshadowed the doodles. I briefly experiment with film in junior high and high school, then found a home in video while working on my teaching credential.
I’ve seen, as a student and a writer, the progression from the manual typewriter to something called a “word processor,” to video editing systems. While the love for the written remains paramount, the promised land remains merging these venues of expression into a new incarnation.
| Learn | I know the mechanics of linear storytelling. I need to learn the mechanics of non-linear, interactive storytelling. What is the balance between the visual, the auditory and the expository elements. |
| Create | I plan to write, illustrate and animate a story/book and publish it electronically. |
| Tools | I plan to use old media (journals) and internet sources to learn more about the effectiveness/ineffectiveness of new media publishing. I plan to use Macromedia’s Flash and Dreamweaver, for the web publishing and animation and Adobe’s Illustrator and Photoshop to create the visual elements. |
| Join | I will be looking for at least one newsgroup that works with childrens’ literature and try to find one that works in Internet/electronic media. I am also hoping to work with others in our OMAET program, particularly Greg Thompson as he creates his work. |
| Teach | As this project develops I’m hoping to bring other authors (students) into the process to lend their hand, in either the illustration or possible plot development/story branching. I’m also hoping to use this project as means of illustrating what is possible beyond oral reports (talking heads) and linear hyperstudio stacks. |
| Publish | This project is meant to be interactive, so I plan to put it up on this site and hope to look to other (larger venue) publishing possilities. |
Blue Print Project Calendar
Here’s my overly aggressive “Calendar” to go from neophyte author to “new media” artiste. Hey, if Bradbury could write “Fahrenheit 451” on a typewrite in a UCLA library in 14-days . . . ah, never mind. Just read the list below and click the “BP Product” link to see what happened.
| Preproduction | October 1 – 15 | Search and research newsgroups and listserv on childrens’ literature and new media tools. Create basic plotline. Decisions needed regarding levels of branching, interaction and multimedia (graphics and sound). |
| Production | October 16 – November 10 | Create expository skeleton (text) noting branching possibilities. Decisions needed regarding user-interface (e.g., button interface, text interface, event driven). Student authors needed for additional story-branching and possible illustrations. Begin creating graphic and audio elements (multimedia rough drafts). |
| Post-Production | November 11 – 30 | Most of the exposition (text) should be in place. Time needed to create “finish” graphic and audio elements (using flash and fireworks). Begin “preview” process with group members for evaluation, support and suggestions |
| Publish | December 1 – 10 | Create website, finished publishing product (CDROMs). |
